The race route headed out passed the old American airfield, against
a stiff wind that chilled the bone (despite the sunny weather, the
temperature did not rise much during the race). I passed the 31K
and approached the city again.

The US Military Community of Karlsruhe was established on July
8, 1945. At its peak the military community spanned three German
administrative districts: the Northern part of Baden, the Southern
part of Baden reaching the Swiss border and the Palatinate. Since
September 1995 the community is but a memory in the community.
What is left? Housing space for over 7,000 people, barracks and
real estate, a considerable American Library (now integrated into
the Karlsruhe Municipal Library) and thousands of personal relationships,
memories of “Little America” in Karlsruhe.
