The first kilometer was pretty crowded, but I resisted the urge
to start weaving through the crowd. I made this mistake last year
during the half-marathon along this route and wore myself out pretty
fast. Despite the crowded conditions I still managed to pass the
1K marker at my pre-established goal pace of 5:30/K (8:51/M). The
1K marker was located near the Karlsruhe Film Palace, pictured below,
a part of the new ZKM (Center for Art and Media Technology) that
was built a few years ago.

The ZKM was established in 1989 and has since gained an international
reputation. An interactive art gallery unites pioneer work and the
latest developments from the field of media art. The artworks themselves
do not materialise until the visitor interacts with them, new and
always different, depending on the visitor's input. Quite a weird
and unique feeling!!!
The Center for Art and Media Technology is a museum of all genres.
There is more to see than media art with television and video sculptures
("monitor-art"), video installations or computer-generated
and animated images. The traditional genres such as sculpture, graphics,
design, photography and painting are presented in their contemporary
forms as well and are brought into lively interplay with the "new
media" - revealing surprising relationships.
The "Mediathek" is divided into an audio collection,
a library and a video collection. Since October 1997, it has held
a comprehensive collection of international video art, contemporary
music and literature on this 20th century art form. All the existing
material on the fields of art, architecture, theater and modern
design can be researched in a central database.
